Nicotine forms an essential ingredient of tobacco and has addictive effects. Besides tobacco smoke contains more than 4,000 chemical compounds. Out of these at least 43 are cancer-causing compounds. Tobacco is smoked through cigarettes, pipes, and cigar and tobacco-smoking causes lung cancer, emphysema, and other respiratory diseases. Smoking also leads to coronary heart disease while pregnant women who smoke give birth to low-weight newborns. Tobacco is also chewed and inhaled which causes cancer of the mouth, nose, and throat and also leads to nicotine addiction.

Cigarette-smoking contributes to almost 90 percent of all lung cancer cases. Tobacco smoke inhaled from cigars, pipes and cigarettes damages the tissues of the mouth, throat, and larynx, or voice box. Studies have shown that smokers have four to five times more chances of developing oral and laryngeal cancer than nonsmokers. Research also links smoking to the development of cancer in bladder, pancreas, kidney, stomach, liver, and uterus. Smoking also affects non-smokers who inhale secondhand smoke from others' cigarettes.

Smoking causes emphysema which is chronic narrowing and clogging of the airway passages in the lung. Rarely do non-smokers develop this disease. However, only 20 percent of heavy smokers are likely to develop it
