There are lots of different postural defects - some can be as seemingly harmless as a headache, whilst others can be severe and very painful.

  • A headache

Headaches can be caused by postural problems because of the strain and tension placed on the muscles in the shoulders and the top of the neck. This strain can, in turn, put pressure on muscles in the head, resulting in headache. Jaw ache can also be caused in this way.

  • Nasal problems and/or sinus problems

Poor posture can lead to sinus congestion and a feeling of being "blocked up" or "stuffy". This is because, if you were to stand with a rounded or arched back, the ducts that allow the drainage of fluid from the nasal and sinus passages can become blocked or closed. As a result, any fluid or mucus from these passages cannot drain away, resulting in common cold-like symptoms. These symptoms will not be relieved by cold medication, however, and may only be resolved by a proper posture.

  • Lower back pain

Lower back pain is caused by a poor posture, particularly if a person leans forward when they stand. This is because the weight of the body is not directed equally and harmoniously down the spine when a person leans forward - instead, more weight and, therefore, more pressure, is placed upon the lower portions of the spine, resulting in pain that can be very severe in some cases.

  • Digestive problems

A poor posture can prevent the stomach and intestines from working properly. This results in the improper digestion of food within these cavities. Improper digestion can cause obvious problems such as constipation or diarrhea, but can also cause serious but less noticeable problems such as malnourishment, because the nutrients are not being extracted from the food properly.
