Well I think that animal testing is horrible... Even though I'm not the animal type person I still think its BAD!! Here are a few facts that should help you...
- Many animals are used in scientific and medical research. They often experience cruel methods of testing and suffer great pain as a result.
- People think that animal testing is bad and usually doesn’t work because animals react differently then humans do, therefore it is useless testing them.
- They do different tests such as ‘the draize eye test’ which is used to test shampoo, weed-killers, pesticides, household detergents and more. Whish are then applied to the animals’ eyes while conscious.
- The most common types of animals they use to test chemicals on are mice, rats and rabbits.
- It is estimated that 50-100 million animals are being tested on each year, world wide.
- Usually when products are getting tested on animals the irritation is so bad that the product actually burns the animal.
- Animal testing costs the American public over $136 billion annually.
- Drugs that pass animal tests end up harming or killing humans about 61% of the time.
- 50% of the animals used for cosmetic testing, 50% die two to three weeks after being tested.

I think that animal testing is 95% wrong and 5% right, (as long as animals aren't severely hurt or killed. If that's the case then I say it's wrong 100%edly!!). It really depends on personal opinion, whether or not you think it's good or bad though. I've done some research and I found valid information regarding both sides.

PROS: saves many lives every year, scientists can learn more about the body, helped with complex surgical techniques, products for humans are tested to be safe, money and effort is being put forth for more humane techniques, almost every large medical discovery in the last 100 years has been found with animal testing, it is vital to medical progression, led to life-saving vaccines for humans and animals, a vaccine for AIDS has been found (for partial immunity), protects the public from chemicals that are very harmful, etc...

CONS: the stress on animals could make some test results invalid, test animals have no freedom; forced to suffer purposeful diseases, the alternatives could be dangerous to scientists and be less correct than using an animal, the animals don't have a choice, repeated tests cause useless suffering, the U.S. Uses 15-20 MILLION animals a year for dissection and testing, animals can get permanently addicted to harmful drugs, some labs keep animals in unsanitary conditions, wounds don't always get bandaged, tests are limited, some things safe for animals are not safe for humans creating false security, 8.8% of animals do not get pain relief (purposely put in pain for study), some animals bred with disease and destines to die, animals can't communicate feelings with humans, can not always detect nausea, headache, and depression in animals, etc...

  ESTIMATIONS

animals on average suffer...

54%= no pain/minor pain
26%= moderate pain
20%= severe pain =(

The decision is yours, but I hope this was helpful!! =D

Animal testing is the use of non-human animals for scientific experimentation. Animal testing has been used since ages in the world in universities, medical schools, pharmaceutical companies, farms, defense establishments and even commercial facilities. They help with subjects such as genetics, developmental biology, behavioral studies, biomedical research, xenotransplantation etc.

The pros of animal testing are as follows:
- It helps in finding exact cure for human diseases.
- It plays a great role in economy.
- It helps a lot in scientific research.

The cons of animal testing are as follows:

- It is hazardous to lives of animals.
- It can be misleading as animals and humans are different.
- Animal testing procedures are painful for animals.

It is up to individuals to decide whether it is wrong or right based on its advantages and disadvantages. However, I personally feel it is totally wrong and alternative procedures should be used in research.

Ok I'm 13 and I have to debate animal testing should be banned. But I am saying that animal testing shouldn't be banned. But I have found a lot of thing about animal like:Almost every medical treatment you use has been tested on animals and every antibiotic you take has been tested on animals. Operations on animals helped to develop organ transplant and open-heart surgery. Billions of animals are killed for food every year, if anything; medical research is a more worthy death. About 45 billion cow’s and pig’s die each year to people killing them for food, half of that is cows and a fourth of that is pigs. Only about 1,101,958 animals die each year from animal testing. If there wasn’t animal testing 220 million people would be dead because animal testing has found a way to get insulin for people that have diabetes. If animal testing was banned millions of people would die because of the medical research that is going on right now all over the world for cancer, HIV, and lots more illnesses.
so if that helped you guys and girls any then yeah! Lol I sound like a nut!

In my opinion, medical testing and research on live animals is necessary in our world today. There is currently no alternative that can accurately predict exactly how a living thing will react to a new treatment or drug; A grown tissue culture could show how that one organ or type of tissue would react, but not how other parts of the body would be affected, what side affects it would cause, or how toxic it would be to the creature as a whole. More than 90% of drugs that have activity in the test tube against infection of tumor cells fail toxicity ratings in rats or mice. Animals have also been used in education for years, and now many medical schools have stopped using animals for training; the first time many students will ever preform a procedure on a living creature will be on a patient.
However, I do feel that strict laws and regulations should continue to be enforced to minimise the number of animals used in testing, to not repeat tests, and to make the testing and living conditions for the animals as humane as possible. I love animals, but I don't feel that animal testing is "pointless suffering". Without the use of animals in learning more about biology, there would be far more suffering and death in our world.

There are many arguments for animal testing both on practical and moral grounds. Those in favor of animal testing argue that over the course of history, animal testing has helped in the development of human vaccines against such diseases as rabies, tuberculosis, measles, mumps, rubella, and polio. Additionally, other medicines such as antibiotics, cancer treatments and HIV drugs rely on animal testing for further development. Additionally, scientists claim that operations on animal test subjects helped develop and advance both open heart surgery and organ transplant procedures and techniques.
From a moral standpoint, those in favor of animal testing also argue that the benefits to human kind trump the rights of the animals and that the animals are protected from cruelty by government regulation and oversight. Additionally, millions of animals are slaughtered for food purposes each year which is a largely accepted practice in society. How is this more humane than using animals to further medical research?
Those against animal testing will counter argue with their own practical arguments like results from animal tests can be misleading as animal reactions do not always mirror those of humans. They also believe that the abnormal stress placed on animal test subjects invalidates many results. People against animal testing also argue not all animals are used for medical testing as some are still used to test things like cleaning products and the benefits to humankind from these tests are minimal at best.
Some of the moral arguments against animal testing are that animals have as much right to life as humans, government control and oversight has not prevented all testers from abusing animals, and that these animals suffer tremendous stress and it is impossible to know with certainty that they don’t experience pain.

It's half right half wrong, the right thing is that as you know, the testing on white rats saved more lives than 911, also scientists could make medicines, which allows us humans to live longer. Then, humans are supposed to rule over animals.

The cons is that animals have feelings too, and then for some people, it's cruel to test animals. Then, it cuts a lot of animal lives, which makes less animals in this world.

Solution= we can do animal testing, but light ones only, the severe ones is supposed to be only 1% out of 100%, also animals could be cloned and so we could test it on clones. Another fact is that animals breed more than us humans, which makes animals multiply faster. Then, cosmetics aren't very necessary since it involves animal testing, so we should cut down the animal testing for cosmetics by A LOT, since there are already many cosmetics out there.

Everything is based on people's opinion, but the real fact is, everyone agrees on animal testing. No animal testing = no cosmetics or medicines, also not much cures can be found for sickness. Seriously though, I bet everyone uses cosmetics and medicines, so if they disagree to animal testing, then don't use any medicines or cosmetics, also several cures for sickness was used by animal testing, so if you don't agree on animal testing, just live with your sickness, not bothering to go to the doctor. All the basis of medicines and cures are from animals. Only cut-down the rates of testing, just that, we don't need to do anything. Then, if you people who say animal testing is cruel, you yourself is crueler! For example you see a bug, you squash it, you see a rat, you scream and see it as disgusting and want to kill it since it's disgusting. Isn't that the same as animal testing? You kill animals while you say animal testing is cruel, sorry for this but it's a fact and you need to confess you agree with me. So you see, animal testing is right but again, lessen the testing on animals

Animal Testing is 100% needed in our world! As you probably know, penicillin is in almost EVERY prescription drug! Many people depend on those penicillin~based drugs to keep waking up in the morning! And penicillin was tested on mice! That distinguished the fact that penicillin was to benefit human kind! And it did! All the animals being used for testing have at least 90% DNA similarities to humans, so the result is almost always correct.
Some people argue that we have modern tech. That we can use in place of animals. WHAT TECHNOLOGY? You can't test a new medicine on a hunk of machinery! WE NEED ANIMALS FOR TESTING!

This is question is very emotive and upsetting - for others there is no debate.

It could be argued that there is no moral justification for inflicting suffering on animals.

Animals have no power over what is inflicted upon them in a laboratry environment.

Many scientists have argued that animal experiments have no value to research into human illness and that no animals should suffer for the sake of vanity eg for cosmetics.

Some companies for example the Co-op actively supports cruelty free products and is recommended by The BUAV. The latter actively campaigns against vivisection as does PETA - People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.

It could be argued that we need to experiment on animals but many people who suffer illness also campaign against testing.

Perhaps if we were made fully aware of the amount of suffering that animals experimentation involves we would campaign for the alternatives to be used more often.

Those who believe it is morally wrong can peacefully work towards pressing for alternatives.
One way the individual can help is to ensure that any household products or cosmetics are cruelty free. Obviously there will be others who don't care.

A very emotive subject indeed

Pros: The law values human life above the life of animals, as do many religions, and therefore the majority of people would prefer drugs designed to save human lives to be tested on animals first.
Animal testing screens drugs which would otherwise kill human beings.
Cons: Many believe animal testing to be immoral as the animal suffers - in the case of cosmetics it is generally agreed that animal testing cannot be justified.
It cannot be known what amount of pain the animal is in, or whether the drugs will cause a similar reaction in humans.

Many scientists also agree that animal testing should be banned since because it causes harm on the animals and only 9% of products that are tested on animals actually reach the market. Plus 94% if animals involved in animal testing are used to test cosmetics or household cleaning products, this leaves only 6% for medical research. An FDA drug assessment states, “Over half of all new medications the FDA approved in a decade were recalled or relabeled because of side effects not observed in animal experiments.”

Well, I think that testing is okay for health reasons, but not so much for human vanity (as stated above). However, I do not think that going to such extremes as killing 500,000 monkeys for a cure is the best way to reach the cure. Not to mention, why would we use rats when monkeys are closer to to human similarity? Confusion on that one...

Ok there are pros of animal testing. It has lead us through medical breakthroughs that saved thousands of people. You may think it is wrong to test on them, but it isn't if it is for COSMETICS. Yeah people use animals to test their eye shadow, lipstick, hair spray, eye liner, etc. It is 100% WRONG if it is used for unnecessary purposes. BUT it is 100% RIGHT if it is used to find a cure for cancer. Lets say your grandma or grampa has cancer. You love them and don't want to lose them. If we didn't use the method of animal testing they will not have a great chance of making it. Ok so for all you people out there, there are opinions for both. And some of you provide both. I'm just saying for everyone to stop complaining and face the facts. There are many reasons for both.

People believe in animal testing because if it weren’t for  testing on animals who would be tested on and how would they be tested. Humans are a superior life form therefore putting humans in danger is illegal. So what other ways are there than testing on animals? Animal testing is 87.64% safe because if the drug is harsh then they are put under anaesthetic.  By testing on animals we are helping find a cure for cancer. Testing on animals helped develop  vaccines for many life threatening illnesses. These illnesses include herpes simplex, hepatitis b, polio, rabies, malaria, mumps, and viruses related to organ transplantation rejection.

Studying aging can be best observed by rats because they only lives two or three years.
• Some experiments require subjects of the same weight and genetic makeup. They have to have special diets and live in special environment which is almost impossible for humans to do. These tests help researchers determine if their findings are continuous.
• Animals have complex body systems like humans and react to allergies and diseases the same which makes them important in research
• Certain animals are important in certain researches for example dogs have similar sized organs as humans. This is important because dogs have saved many defected babies’ lives.
• Open-heart surgery, coronary bypass surgery, and heart transplantation were all created using dogs.
• Mice and rats play a big part in research because when the experiments are repeated a pool of data is created.  Also, their fast reproduction rate is an important factor for geneticists who need more than one generation so their data could be compared.
• Many people look at what animal experimentation hasn’t done but if you look at what has been accomplished a longer life span has been achieved, decreased infant deaths, and drugs have been created to fight the diseases that were once fatal.
• 54 out of the 76 Nobel prizes given since 1901 in physiology or medicine have been given to the breakthroughs caused by animal testing
• Diseases that have been eliminated by animal testing are smallpox, measles, creation of life saving techniques, brain surgery, and blood transfusions.
• Many of the people would not be here today if it wasn’t for the advances in technology. Their parents would have died of scarlet fever, tuberculosis, or diabetes.
• No nation within the US has accepted a ban for animal experimenting. Laws to ban animal experimenting has been introduced but no majority of American people or their representatives have ever supported these bills
• Other nations also use animal experimentation and countries like Japan are major competitors.
• In polls the American people say that animal experimentation is supported but at the same time wish that animals should be protected against any pain and suffering.
• Research is important and should continue to progress. It is the key to getting rid of AIDS, Cancer and many other deadly diseases.

Because humans are going to die anyway. Why not just do the testing on humans, then. Like a friend of mine said: If you're going to die tomorrow, why not just have some tests done on you today. Only around 6% of all animals used in animal testing is for medical reasons, the rest are for house hold purposes and cosmetics. FDA and consumer product safely commision also do not require that animal tests are preformed for these products, only medical. Even drugs that are animal tested are usually withdrawn from the market because they are dangerous to humans. You could ask why the test on animals and the answer is because the animals are like humans. When asked why they test on animals over humans the answer is because animals are not like humans. Logical contradiction.

There is no pro when it comes to animal testing.
We work for the purposes of furthering our own lives and ignore the fact that mortality is one of the things that makes us indeed human.
Animal testing is inhumane.
Would you take your neighbor out of their happy life and breed him or her for the plain purpose of finding a way to help yourself in the long run?
Dideases come along sure but we could find a way to overcome them through other methods of testing besides testing on these poor little creatures. A lot of this may be just my opinion but these animals deserve a good life just as any of us do, you wouldnt take a person and just test on them to further your own desire to further your mortality right?
Animals have emotion and feelings, some of these tests you put them through could seriously injure them if not kill them which has happened with many of these animals. Using them in testing to help humans with disease doesnt evactly make complete sense to me. In order to stufy the human anatomy it would be correct to use a human right? Animals may carry some of the same components as humans but still there are many things about animals that are much much different than the human.  Animals have a right to be treated as value in themselves, not as the means to human ends. In practice, as everyone knows, animals are not routinely treated well by animal experimenters. Apart from the fact that millions of animals die each year in experiments, others are often not adequately anaesthetised and are abused by handlers and experimenters. It is idealistic to suppose that this will ever stop as long as society endorses vivisection. And in my opinion Xicubestza is wrong...in those labs and testing facilities there is no seen escape for a little animal such as a rabit or a mouse.. If you were trapped in a cage in a place much larger than you were yourself were and there were giants poking things at you sure the sensible thing would be to escape, but you are in an unfamiliar environment and  the possibility of being caught is exponentially high. Imagine yourself being in a room. Small, enclosed with bars and cages much like a laboratory. Your first thought would be "I hafta get out!" But when you think of it, your body is numb. Thats what these animals must be feeling. Lost confused and helpless. Humanity has taken advantage of the one thing we were sent to protect. Animals are people too. All animals want is to eat, sleep, and be loved..Especially domesticated animals who just long for the love of their human, when you take them and put them in these places all they learn is to fear humans, testing on them is destroying the foundation for what we learn to bring back, endangered animals are our fault, and for all we know scientists could have been testing on them too helping lead to the cause of their near extinction. When an animal attacks a human we automatically blame the animal. Do we ever think of blaming ourselves? Animals, much like humans, act on impulse. They do what they need to survive and we only blame them.

Its not like we should be allowed to play "god" and give animals an inferiority complex to human. They live breathe and love just like people. They feel, hurt and die. JUST LIKE PEOPLE! So why do we treat them so terribly? Over the years yes, we have found advancements. But at what cost? If someone was to walk into your backyard kill your cat or dog and say "Its for science." would you be ok with it? Would you let them take it? What will happen if someone needs information on something only a human body can answer? Are we going to start a new experiment to find another animal breed much like humans? To what I can understand, slavery is still around. We use animals for our own benefit, when really....there isn't any. What are we really curing? No one is immortal. No one is capable of living longer than 100. And to a point...not everything is cure. If animal testing is really that "helpful" then why do people still die. People with diabetes must live with so much pain. (I know the pain so don't challenge me on this) There is still no cure. Brest cancer. Humans walk 3 days for it. Animals are murdered and put to death. Where is the pro?

Pros:
1.)Supporters of animal testing argue that if animal testing is eliminated, that many of the medications and procedures that we currently use today wouldnt exist and the development of future treatments would be extremely limited.
2.) Animal testing not only benefits humans health but also other animals, for example the heartworm medication.
Cons:
1.) Countless animals are experimented on and the killed after their use, others are injured and stay in captivity till they suffer and die.
2.) The sheer cost. Animal testing suprisingly costs a lot of money housing, the things they experiment them on, and actually buying the animal from the breeders specifically breed to be tested on.

I support NO MORE ANIMAL TESTING because they are hurting a lot of animals and they deserve peace. We already take trees that are some animals or species home. So why do we have to take the animals life to? Thats not right. Thats really not fair. I think that if there would be any animal testing that we take animals that there is a surplus of that there are to many of. We do not want to lose anymore animals do we? NO. Or we could use humans BUT WAN TINGLY ONLY ! I think forcing nature isn't right and whoever thought of this animal testing was a sick person.

I am actually doing an english essay on why animal testing should be banned worldwide. I have come up with 4 reasons why: 1)animal testing costs a lot to perform-food, controlled environment, cost of the animal itself, and the cost of the substance that is to be performed/tested on the animal 2)animals and humans are very different so they will react different to different substances. These are cons to animal testing and I completely believe that animal testing is wrong! I think people that are pro-animal testing should do more research on what actually goes on and what happens to animals in testing laboratories. <

Animal testing is a really difficult issue. Is it right that animals should be bred just for experimentation and lead lives with no freedom, no quality of life and then be induced to have cancer, mental health issues, heart disease etc etc?
Do we not have a moral responsibility to ensure that we do not inflict horrendous suffering daily on millions of animals worldwide?
Yet the pros are also strong. When we are all well, healthy and those we love are ok, we are more likely to condemn animal testing. But if our partner, spouse or child has a life threatening disease and a doctor said that testing on a monkey could save that person, how many of us could say that we would let our loved one die? Every day we all take medicines and treatments which have been tested on animals and these drugs have been created, due to the suffering of animals !
There is no definitive answer to this dilemma, but perhaps instead of being blind to the issue, we should be more aware of just how drug companies work and exactly how tests are carried out. This may make us a little more grateful for what we have !

Fore word:
I have been informed on both sides i was once a member of PETA but i soon found out that many of the people in PETA were not supporting animals in the proper fasion. I am also a scientist whit a Docterate in Forensic Toxicology, i have tested on animal before but the animals i tested on were dead of natural causes

Now many people say it is "unethical" to test on animals, i agree in most cases but when you look at some of the statistics online from PETA or anywhere else they are taking things from the 50's where there were very very few reforms and laws on animal testing, and testing facilities. Nowadays we must (even for dead animal [once again natural causes]) put our plan of action, experiment, and staff through a board of supervisors and then a board scientists and then our facilities are checked by government officials and other scientist. Also we must purchase animals through certain government approved companies.
Yes there are alternatives to animal testing, but they can be dangers for the experimentors and the results arent as accurate as others portray them to be.

Skintex/Eytex-Any of the beams used for the research can put out radiation that can cause from a bad rash to skin cancer

EdiPack-I myself have never used this alternative but i have been told that cloning is an extremely unefftive way to test because clones themselves are unstable and produce skewed results

Now there are many other alternative but i am tired and do not feel like typing that much for i am olny human..

so to wrap this up

Pros: saves many lives every year, animals are not harmed (anestesia), helps scientist and police solve crimes, helpes doctors learn how to body will react to certain procedures (sorry i didnt mention that in my above explaination)

Cons:Unessisary in some cases, Animals have no chance to do anything aginst it (then again they are animals and if they wanted out theyd find a way)

Their are people homeless in the streets children without homes and food but that don't matter because animals are more important to you.

Its not because animals are nmore important, we care about human welfare as well but testing on those poor creatures is not humane either. I understand that humans are on the streets but adults are ususally there for their own reasons, children get draged down with their selfish parents. I care for both sides, but what about those inmates in for life who are just rotting away in a cell? They would probably give almost anything to get out of there. Why not use them if they decide to go

Vouluntarily? It gives them their chance at being some what free even though that freedom comes at a cost. Im not saying take average joes off the street who have a life to go home too. Take those who will accept the chance to go and take it as an opportunity to help others, im sure non selfish patrons who are dieing or who have a friend or realative who suffers from a disease and give their bodys to science. But the animals dont have a choice, humans have a voice animals dont.

Its not like people dont matter but animals are people too. We shouldnt be allowed to do some of the things we do to animals. What if someone took your pet and killed it right in front of you because they wanted to do an experiment. Would you let them? What possible pros are their? My family is filled with medical problems and no one is doing anything logical to help. All we hear is "its gonna be OK. No problem" But there is a BIG problem. The people without homes are helped in shelters but only
