Hiccups, while not being a serious condition, can cause annoyance if prolonged, and there are several tips available for getting rid of them. However, what might work for one person may not work for another. One tip is to swallow one teaspoonful of white sugar dry, repeating every 2 minutes if needed. You can also gulp down a glass of water, gargle with water, or hold a teaspoonful of honey in your mouth. Other techniques include holding your breath for 30 seconds before releasing it, breathing into a paper bag for five times in a row, sipping water for a period of time. More extreme solutions might include acupuncture, holding your ears and drinking water, sucking on hard candy, and drinking pickle juice. It is also recommended that you get something to try and startle you from your hiccups, either by surprising you or asking a difficult and confusing question.

Get someone to hold your ears closed so you can't really hear any thing and drink a cup of water with out stopping, unless you can't breathe out of your nose. It works every time trust me. If it doesn't work than you did something wrong, try it again.

Drink a glass of water backwards, so lean forwards and drink a glass as though you are upside down usually works.

Although the cause of hiccups is not very well known, below are few suggestions that will help you get rid of them.

If you are getting frequent hiccups you can swallow 1 tsp of white table sugar, according to a survey conducted by doctors it is said that this has helped 24 out of 25 people immediately to cure their hiccups.

If the sugar cubes don't work you can gulp down a glass of water, this method is also helpful in many ways. Eating a small piece of dry bread can also be helpful to certain extent. You can also gargle with water, although this is not helpful but according to some people it has worked in the past.

What my grandma used to say, was to hold water in your mouth, lay on the floor and swallow it. If you get the hiccups, it is a good solution, grandma said so herself.
