When you've found someone that you're comfortable with, counseling can be beneficial to helping you to find coping skills that will work for you. It can help you to open up and move on from abuse depending on the degree and length of the abuse. It can also be beneficial in helping you to deal constructively with emotions that may be a result of the abuse instead of dealing with it destructively. I don't think you can 100% protect yourself against abuse. It sometimes rears it's head unexpectedly. Just be aware of what your own comfort levels, meaning if something makes you feel uncomfortable or something makes you question in your mind, it's probably a good sign to put some distance immediately. However if it's a loved one and you are already involved and it rears it's ugly head, exit as soon as it is safe to do so. And for heaven's sake, if you can't be strong to stand up to this type of individual or to put your foot down, then you need to move on and don't even consider going back or entertaining thoughts of second chances!!! Abuse is a very complex situation to deal with as there is no one formula across the board in dealing with this.

For me counselling is not necessary, mental toughness is more important to face abuse.
