Alice, sometimes products have to be used on a living organism to achieve the best possible test result. I.e. Medications. So with this in mind, our options for testing is narrowed down very quickly. Animals or human beings. Sometimes the testing results produce devastating reactions. This unfortunately is the nature of this field. If it wasn't there would be no need to test. Getting back to our choice; animals or humans. It is my personal belief that a human being should not be considered more expendable than an animal. I do believe however great measure should be taken to reduce at the least the length and degree these animals suffer.
