It is difficult to say if you are overweight without fully knowing where that weight is distributed. If you are using the Body Mass Index scale, then your score would be 27.3 which would place you in the overweight category. However the Body Mass Index scale is meant for the use of an average person. If you are a sports player such as a weightlifter or rugby player, or any other sports where high amounts of muscle are needed, then you shouldn’t use the Body Mass Index. The Body Mass Index has said that rugby players such as Jonathan Wilkinson were showed to be obese due to his height and weight due to muscle. The thing to remember is that muscle weighs significantly more than fat.

However if that is not the case then medically speaking you are overweight. To reduce your weight then you should undertake an aerobic exercise plan working at the fat burning level throughout.

Cardio workouts can be any exercise that raises and maintains your heart rate running, cycling, swimming, stepping or treadmill walking or strength trainers or elliptical machine. Cardio training provides numerous benefits for strength trainers. It:

•Reduces body fat and maintains a low body fat percentage.
•Increases the body's fat-burning capacity during exercise and rest.
•Improves body composition.
•Increases the metabolic rate.
•Reduces stress and anxiety.
•Improves confidence, self-esteem and mood.
•Reduces blood pressure, blood cholesterol and the risk of heart disease.
•Boosts the immune system.

Whether you choose a high or low-intensity cardio program for fat burning depends on your goals, fitness level and time availability. Both types will develop cardiovascular fitness but high-intensity cardio over 70% of your V02 max is more effective. If time is an issue then shorter periods of high-intensity cardio will give you the same results in terms of fat loss as longer periods of low-intensity cardio.

Well, I am 5 foot 7 and weigh 12 stone. Personally, I don't think I am overweight, because I am big boned. I weighed 8.2 when I was born lol. But, I would like to get to 11 stone or so, so that I know I'm healthy. When I was 5 foot 6 I actually nearly weighed 14 stone :( So I started doing aerobic workouts, I don't drink juice or pop, just water, no chocolate, sweets, fatty food. In a matter of a few months I lost 2 stone! I recommend this to you, as I guarantee you will see outcomes, not only in your weight but also in your skin. Hope this helps :D

12 stone 13 pounds is about 180 pounds....

For women who is 5'6, the ideal weight is:

120-133 pounds (small frame)
130-144 pounds (medium frame)
140-159 pounds (large frame)

180 pounds is 21 pounds over the large frame (1.5 stone over).

If you had a small frame, you would be 47 pounds overweight (3.3 stones overweight).

So to answer your question, yes, it is overweight.  For your health, it would be a good idea to get down to around 130 pounds.

Adopt a proper diet/exercise plan and you will see success.

Muscle weighs more than fat. I'm 5ft 6in and weigh 12st 10, I have lost almost 4 stones now and finally feel really good about myself. I am a UK size 14, eat healthily and exercise vigorously 5 times a week, including running 10 miles every Sunday. I feel if I lost anymore than a few pounds in weight I would begin to look unhealthy and also feel unhealthy. You have to realise that BMI is just there as a guide and everyone's 'Healthy' weight is different. If you exercise regularly and eat well then you have nothing to worry about, as long as you feel healthy and happy in yourself.

The people that are saying the BMI chart is 100% correct and follow it are right where they are suppose to be in terms of the 'Perfect' body weight, and have what the BMI has classed as the 'normal' body type.
