If the cells in our bodies constantly replace themselves, how come God didn't work out that it might be more beneficial if our joints could replace themselves as whole units instead of as individual cells? My knees and ankles could certainly use a reboot.

Didge, my friend, you know I love you and I love my God. :0)

I want to give you a serious answer..... Or at least take my best shot at it. I think He designed our bodies to age, to grow old. Now I know some of your testimony. You are a triathlete. My uneducated "educated" guess would be that your knees, ankles and joints feel the effects of the many years of putting stress on those body parts. :0)

I think we should establish a blood bank with young peoples blood so we could get transfusions of uncontaminated cells to replace our worn out cells. We could pressgang them if there weren't enough volunteers.

Hi Dozy, well I thought of a story for you...
It's my friend Rosella, she is older than me, and we trade stories of our fathers both who had great sense of humour...

Rosella's father broke his hip at the age of 87. That kind of break is not easy at any age as you know, and Dad said: "If I had died when I should of, I wouldn't have had to go through all this."

That wasn't supposed to be an answer. It was a comment on somebody else's answer and now, for the life of me, I can't remember whose. Dagnabbit. :(

I think I'd like Rosella's father. :)

@DM- Ive always thought less of people who presume they hold the high ground in every discussion, especially when their case is based on ego and bad logic ---not facts. Just a bore.

Your cells replicate X amount of times, then they do not.

Depending upon your genetics, your joints might succumb that much sooner then someone else's . . .

Of course none of this was information readily available to those creating the stories of Gods/God so we are left with blanketed statements such as "God is Good".  This is so that believers can "Pray away" their aches and pains.

Last fall I had minor surgery to fix a torn meniscus in my left knee.  They cut out the ripped part which the joint never grows back again . .  So I get where you are coming from Digde.

The process is interesting since I am swapping out (Burning off) the extra fat, but gaining Lean Dense muscle . . . which weighs more.
So in a sense I am offloading that which is unhealthy with that which may be heavier but increases my metabolism and is more healthy.

That sounds great to somebody whose body is still young enough to stoop, and bend, and walk, and run, and jump on demand. It doesn't feel quite as cheerful to somebody who has trouble cutting their toenails. :(

Thanks for answering, Nice Girl. It wasn't really a serious question. I was just complaining about my aches and pains. >;-/

We are rather shoddily designed.  The knee and the back are certainly not well engineered.  He gave dolphins better designed eyes than he gave us.  The appendix, really?  The samne for my prostrate.

Got a chuckle out of your answer, but I'm laughing with you, not at you.

And at 71, I find it necessary to occasionally distinguish between my prostrate problems and my prostate problems.

I also am amused when someone at certain levels of government refers to the recent physical year numbers.

I was riding along with you until you got to the prostate. Then the smile vanished and the gloomy expression settled back over my face.

Maybe when my next incarnation is due I'll ask him if I can come back as a dolphin.

You've said that so often I sometimes wonder whether you mean it literally. The Higgs boson was certainly an extraordinary discovery, but I doubt that it will do much for my arthritis, even if I say pretty please.

It's part of the ordeals of his plan. If I got it right, aging and whatnot are supposed to be part of the test to determine whether you're worthy to go to heaven (sorry if I got it wrong)

Dear Didge,

I am taking a break from the Pratchett book, and come late to your (very profound and serious) question!

I don't really have an answer, but I will tell you my eyes really opened when I saw Otis' answer...because, what Otis told you is reminiscent of Joseph Campbell. I saw in one of his last interviews with Bill Moyer, and Moyer asked Campbell if all the mythology had been helpful in his own personal life.

Well Campbell's answer was that yes, as his body breaks down with age he views it all in the framework of the mythology, just like an old car giving out...btw I am seeing more and more of that in my own body, too...

(As I reread that I am not sure it even makes sense...but at the time of the interview maybe 1990, it certainly did...stayed in my mind...)
