I was always taught that you should brush your teeth for a minimum of 2 minutes, and ALWAYS with an up and down motion, not side-to-side, in order to remove debris from between the teeth.

You should brush your teeth for at least 2 minutes.  Using a circular motion.  On the backside of your teeth turn your brush to a 45 degree angle and use upward strokes to loosen the plaque. Same thing on your uppers but use a downward stroke.  You should also brush your teeth at least 2x a day.  And if you can't brush after meals you should drink water or chew a piece of gum to keep  your teeth clean and healthy.  Also make sure you are flossing at least once a day.  I know this because I have 4 people in my family that are in the dental profession.  Have fun!

Oral care and looking after one's teeth and gums are very important for maintaining good health. In order to clean teeth it is necessary to remove plaque and tartar from it. The accumulation of plaque and tartar on tooth surfaces will lead to disease and infections like dental caries and periodontal disease. To clean teeth several factors should be taken into consideration like the toothbrush, toothpaste, the angles of cleaning the teeth etc. Some people think that brushing the teeth for a longer time would help to clean it better. This is a wrong assumption with no basis.    The other factors are more important than the time your teeth are brushed. The time for brushing one's teeth is a personal issue and varies from person to person. While some require only some time some other need more time. Yet generally teeth should be regularly brushed for twice a day i.e. Before breakfast and after supper for three to four minutes. This would help in the healthy maintenance of teeth.

To prevent cavities, you need to remove plaque, the transparent layer of bacteria that coats the teeth. The best way to do this is by brushing your teeth twice a day and flossing at least once a day. Brushing also stimulates the gums, which helps to keep them healthy and prevent gum disease. Brushing and flossing are the most important things that you can do to keep your teeth and gums healthy.

You need to brush all areas carefully. You do not need to brush hard, just thoroughly.  Your dentist can discuss technique with you.  Many do not know how to brush properly, and until a few years ago, it seemed dentist's didn't either.

Well you should know how long you brush your teeth for.

If you want to know how long I think as long as you do it, the better it is.
