You do need a plaster cast if you break your elbow or a splint. You can break your elbow by hitting it very hard against a wall or something else that's hard

I broke my elbow tying my shoes! I bent down to tie my laces and I accidentally made a cartwheel and I banged my elbow hard on a metal pole.

It can be extremely painful breaking any bone in your body and if you are accident prone, you could end up breaking your bones more than others. One bone that may cause problems is the bone in your elbow. It can be quite restricting as you cannot turn your arm around or bend your elbow too much because of the broken bone.

There are some bones in the body where nothing can be done for them apart from to rest the affected area, and it is roughly the same for a broken bone in the elbow. You cannot have a plaster cast for a broken elbow because you need to try and move your arm as much as possible. This is to prevent the elbow from getting a blood clot. It is not easy to move the elbow but you need to try so that you can get more movement and to obviously stop the blood clots from occurring. You will have to rest the elbow and use a sling for a week or so but then you will need to start moving it as much as possible.
