Yes, it is possible for surgery to delay a period. This is mainly down to the stress and upheaval surgery can cause you and your body. This stress can cause havoc with your regular monthly cycle and so a delay can occur.

This delay is normally only a few days, so if your period is late by weeks rather than days then this would be a great concern. If this was the case, the best advice would be to book an appointment with your doctor immediately. They will know you have just had surgery and will be able to tell you if it is normal for your period to then be delayed by this long. They will be able to examine you and talk to you about any other side-effects you may be suffering since the surgery.

If there are any complications then at least you are in the best hands. The doctor will refer you to the hospital if any further operations are needed to take place.

With any medical concern it is always better to head to the doctors straight away rather than trying to 'google' the answer. Many serious diseases have the same mild symptoms as something very common and not at all serious such as the flu or an upset stomach. Therefore instead of worrying and scaring yourself by thinking the worse it is better to get the real answer straight away from the doctor.

Yes, I know because I had Gall Bladder surgery last May and I actually missed my period the next month.  It was so odd.  I worried about it so I called my doctor and talked to them about it and they said it was normal.  It probably depends on what your surgery was for also.  If your worried call your doctor and ask them it doesn't cost anything and it will give you peace of mind.

I just had sinus surgery April 14th and was due to get my period the week after.  It's now May 18th and I'm still waiting.  There was a chance that I was pregnant, but I took 2 tests before the surgery to be sure that I wasn't, and they both came back negative.  Just hoping I will get my period soon.  I've spent a lot of time researching this on-line...seems that a lot of women experience problems with their cycles after surgery.  I think Dr's ought to take the time to mention that this is a possibility with any surgery so that you know what to expect.  It would take a mere second to say something about it.  :)  But have saved me a few hours research and several hours of concern.

I had gallbladder surgery on March 5th 2009, it is May 15th now, and I still have not had a period.  Got to say freaking me out a bit over here.  Nice to hear someone else missed a period too though.  We were trying to have a baby, so we just thought we were pregnant, but tests are negative, guess the surgery really really messes with your cycles.

Had gallbladder surgery on January 28th, started bleeding heavily three days after the surgery and got really worried, the doctor said it was normal because of anesthesia, it really messes up your menstrual cycles

I also had gall bladder surgery a month ago. My cycle is usually regular and this month I am late. I was just curious if it had anything to do with the surgery, its good to know that this happened to other people too!

I am so glad I found these two answers on here.  I had surgery on August 12, 2009 and I just got a light period this last week on 9/25, super light where it's just pantiliner but noticeable.  I have PCOS ( Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome) and so my periods are irregualr as it is, sometimes I don't get one until 40 to 50 days due to lack of ovulation but I have never skipped one, so good to know that it may be due to surgery.  I also got off the pill and so I was thinking that I am probably not pregnant due to the PCOS, however, I started worrying that something was really wrong.  Thanks!

I had a double hemorrhoidectomy on May 7, 2010 and was due to start my period on May 10th and it's May 31st...and nothing. I am aware that surgery, stress, changes in normalcy can cause delay, but I would really like to have at least a SIGN! Ugg. Two negative pregnancy tests, also....

I had a breast augmentation on Monday and should have started my perios on Wednesday but here it is Thursday and still nothing worth writing home about.  Just a little dab of blood.  The doctor did a pregnancy test before surgery and came back negative.
