The earliest methods of birth control were certain barrier methods and some kinds of herbs that acted as methods of contraception. But the most popular methods were sexual abstinence. Coarse and crude condoms made of animal skin were found from the start of the seventeenth century. Withdrawal of penis before ejaculation was also a commonly practiced method of birth control.

Though the above mentioned herbs and condoms were available it was considered as irreligious and going against culture to use these methods. Hence many preferred the natural ways like the withdrawal of penis, monitoring menstrual cycle for birth control during the colonial times. The other methods were opposed by all the major religions like Christianity, Islam and Hinduism therefore there was a lot of reluctance and hesitation in using those methods of contraception.
