What Does White Matter On A Brain Scan Mean?

White spots on a brain scan could be caused by several different factors. One possibility could be a hardening of small arteries in the brain as a result of high blood pressure, causing a buildup of fluid. The spots might also be linked to an early onset of a stroke or other neurological condition, such as a migraine or MS. It is difficult for radiologists to diagnose white spots from an MRI scan, as there is only a small chance that they could be malignant and abnormal as opposed to benign. White matter can appear as a natural phenomenon of the brain due to the coating of axon nerve fibers with myelin, which gives it its appearance on a scan. Although in the majority of cases the appearance of these spots is not cause for concern, it is still recommended if in doubt to seek a consultation in regard to future tests to determine if they are symptomatic of a neurological decay, with multiple sclerosis or even a brain tumour as essentially worst case scenarios.

I have been told by a Neurologist and a Multiple Sclerosis Specialist that white spots found on the brain can be from several things from Migraines, Lyme disease, MS and Lupus. He further stated he needs lab work results including Vitamin D levels, testing for Lyme disease, Thyroid, Vitamin B12, and then requires a list of symptoms that you are experiencing. Once he has all this information he will perform some physical tests (balance and coordination) and if still not sure what is going on, then a spinal tap is ordered. I have been told that you will almost always get a diagnosis after all of this has been performed. I hope this helps. All I can say is make an appt. With a Neurologist. It seems like many primary doctors will just ignore your complaints, seeing as they are not real sure what is going on.

In Dec of 2009 I experienced a Grand Mal seizure after weeks of nausea and vomiting, fever and chills.I was put on Dilantin, then Tripoli. One month later I experienced the severe nausea, chills and a fever that left me unconscious lying on the bathroom floor. My son found me, my fever was 105.6 when I arrived at the hospital. All I was told was that there was some swelling on the right side  brain and white matter on my brain which appeared to be old. I am now on Keppra 2000 mg a day. I'm 48 years old and have never experienced and seizures before Dec. 2009. Can you tell me what the white matter could be from? And also whether I should be living alone?

It all started out with swim ear. I went to dr and they did hearing test and said that I had severe hearing lost in my right ear. They said that as you age peoples   hearing wont be as good as when you where young. Okay I can understand that but they said since both ears were so different they wanted to do mri. Mri came back with white matter changes and said could be ms or mini strokes. How do they come to that conclusion? They have me scared out of my mind.

I had a scan done last week and was told today by my dr that they found several white spots on my scan. I have suffered a long time from migraines and finally have a dr that takes me seriously and sent me to get a scan. I go back next week for blood test so they can test for lyme disease and whatever else they think I need to be tested for. What does this mean(white spots) are these parts of my brain that has died off ?? I couldnt get a straight answer from the dr today she said wait till we see the specialist.I'm starting to get scared,,,

I have been told I have white spots in my brain too.  They continued more tests concluding with the spinal tap.....I have yet to speak with the doctors office whom ordered this stuff...they don't return any of our calls.  I did get a generic letter that the spinal tap was within normal limits.  I'm still having the sharp pains in my toes, feet and eyes.  Any suggestions?
