My Dogs Penis Stays Out Constantly. What Does This Mean?

Carefully place the dog's tush into a sink, bathtub, or pan with cold, cold water. You need to make sure he stays in the water for at least 5 minutes. This will help reduce any inflammation. Now here is where it gets tricky. You kinda have to understand the construction of a penis. You'll need Vaseline or baby oil (I used baby oil) Pour baby oil over his bare penis and make sure it gets into the foreskin area. Grab the base of the foreskin, NOT the bare penis. Carefully begin kneading the base (sorta like massaging it) you may need to grab his penis and apply pressure to it by holding firmly and pushing it in. If you are patient and persistent, you'll find that it will eventually begin to decrease in size and the foreskin will start to budge and begin to allow the penis to retract into place. It is what some people would call a gross job. But I am not about to pay my vet 150eur to do what it took me a little while to do. And my dog's condition was worse than anything described on this page and he did not get necrosis or lose his penis or die. It is a perfectly natural thing to happen. It happens to men who have not been circumcised, except our foreskin begins at the base of the head of our penis. The dog's foreskin begins way behind. Patience, stay calm, and work it firmly until it goes down to normal size.

If he's not excited and it's out (penis is limp), then his glands are probably not working well, meaning he has a dry penis.  In this case, use KY Jelly, it will help.  My dog had this issue, so my vet told me to use lube.  Everytime it comes back out, reapply or else he will likely get an infection.  Medication for an infection is not cheap, either.
But of course, if you're dog is excited, then yes it will come out (stiff) and stay out, but it should eventually retract.

Pull the skin over the penis , I had this problem with my male boxer and did not know what to do I left it over night and it was huge the next day, I took him to the vet and he had to have surgery to put it back in ,I wanted to breed him so I didn't neutered him, when he did go with a female it happened again I took some ky jelly and pushed it back into place and pulled the skin into place ,later took him to the vet and had him neutered.I don't know if it is the same thing or not so you need to see the vet.

My 8 month old puppy's "lipstick" was partially sticking out for a couple of days and got my wife really worried.  We googled it and didn't find much of an answer but to inspect the area and see if something was keeping it from retracting.  Well, it turns out that the sheath was actually retracting in with the penis.  I worked it back out and then trimmed his hair around the sheath to keep it from being pulled in again.  Hope this helps you.  Good times.

My dog seemed to have this problem and  I used a lubricant and it seemed to slip back in right away.  Very happy as he is my best friend and I never want him to suffer.  He doesn't seem to be in any distress.

I'm betting the dog is young,I had the same problem when my male was young. First you need a good triple antibiotic it will get very sore and raw most otcs will work then try a cold shallow bath carefully splash the water up on the penis don't leave him in for too long about 5 mins you may have to gently pull the outside skin up over the penis. I have no idea why this happens for sure but I did have a dog in heat at the time and he was too young at the time to really do anything at the time.Good luck.

Our dog is Neutered any this is the second time he's done it. Last time it cost $150 to have the vet put it back in and now 3 weeks later he's done it again. I have tried to put it back and I can't do it! I'm betting it's behavioral as to why he's doing this.  Everytime our daughter is gone, she is his main caregiver. He also sucks it till it bleeds sometimes. He is a shitzu/cockapoodle.I'm going to rename him B.J and he's going to have to go. I can't afford his problem.
