BiPAP stand for bi-level positive airway pressure. It is a medical term used for a breathing machine that helps people get air into their lungs much easier.  Back in the 1980s, it was known as the C-PAP machine. However, in the 1990s, it became known as the BiPAP machine. It is most commonly used with patients who suffer from sleep apnea (which is the cessation of breathing while sleeping caused by a collapsed airway).  The pressure that is emitted by the BiPAP machine allows the person to breathe easier while they sleep and it prevents the person’s airway from collapsing.

Unlike the C-PAP machine, the BiPAP machine has the ability to be set at one level of pressure for inhalation and another level of pressure for exhalation. Therefore, the BiPAP machine has the ability to be set according to the individual person’s needs. It allows the person to breathe in and out without a lot of forced muscular effort. It provides a natural breathing experience for the person while they sleep.

The BiPAP machine has also been known to help people with congestive heart failure and other very serious lung and respiratory problems.  Doctors prescribe this machine for patients who are having trouble breathing on their own.  However, the BiPAP machine is not a cheap machine. Normally, the machine will cost between $2000 and $5000. Many times, it will be covered by insurance, depending on the patient’s insurance company. BiPAP machines can be purchased without a prescription or there are also many medical supply companies that rent the machine at a minimal cost.

If you suffer from sleep apnea or other respiratory diseases, then you may want to discuss the use and benefits with a doctor. It is best to have a doctor recommend the use of a BiPAP machine other than simply purchasing one. A doctor will be able to tell you if you could benefit from the machine or not according to your individual case.
