There is not a specific number of layers that make up a nail plate. The layers of keratin that make the nail plate vary in number between individuals and can be affected by the condition of the nail itself. These layers of keratin build up a strong and flexible material that is made up of several layers of dead, flattened cells.

The underlying capillaries of the nail are what causes the nail plate to appear pink. The shape of the nail plate is determent on the form of the individual underlying bone. Typically when referring to a nail, it is the actual nail plate that is being imagined. This structure is found alongside the matrix, the nail root, the free margin and the eponychium, among others.

  • The matrix
This is the tissue that the nail rests upon. It is the part of the nail bed that extends beneath the nail root and contains blood vessels, lymphs and nerves. The matrix produces the necessary cells that become the nail plate. The size length of thickness of the matrix is what affects the overall appearance of the nail plate.

  • The nail root
This is the part of the nail that is buried into the nail sinus and the base of the nail that is embedded into the skin. The nail root originates from the matrix. · The free margin. The anterior edge of the nail plate that corresponds with the cutting edge of the nail is the free margin.

  • The eponychium
Most commonly referred to as the cuticle, this is the small band of epithelium that extends from the posterior nail wall onto the nail. The layer of skin is non-living and rides out onto the surface of the nail plate.

The layers of keratin that make up the nail plate are just one part of the complex set up that is the nail.

There are 3 layers. Dorsal, intermediate and ventral nail plate.and each are produced by 3 areas of nail production.
1- dorsal is produced by upper nail matrix.
2- intermediate is produced by lower nail matrix.
3- nail bed is produced by ventral nail plate.

Hope this information is helpful to you :)
