The function of the trachea is to maintain and protect the air way. It's lined with mucus glands which is humidifying as the air passes through it and catches the small particles before they enter. Trachea is supplied by nerves that are part of the cough reflex that helps get rid of irritation.

Trachea also called as wind pipe is tubular structure lying ventral to the oesophagus and extends to the thorax cavity. It is one of the most important part of the respiratory system. In vertebrates it consist of about 20 C-shaped cartilage rings which prevent the air passage from collapsing. It is the passage through which oxygen containing  air from the nostrils passes on to the lungs. Tachea is lined with the mucus secreting cells. The air passing through it also contain some dust particles, on passage through wind pipe these dust particles are trapped in the mucus thus the air is purified before entering into the lungs. In addition it is lined with the cilia that entrap foreign particles and by their movement push it upward to the pharynx through lyranx or helps its swallowing into the stomach.

Trachea is also known as windpipe. It is a tube that has inner diameter of 20-25 mm and is 10-16 cm in length. It starts at the larynx and bifurcates into bronchi and allows the passage of air into the lungs.

Trachea allows the passage of air into lungs. It produces mucus with pseudostratified ciliated columnar epithelium cells. The C-shapes Cartilaginous rings on the sides for protecting and maintaining the airway.

Your trachea closes off your lungs when you swallow anything, so the food or liquid dose not enter into your lungs and kill you.
It is horidd when it dose not work.
