The oxidation test for alcohols involves the addition of the alcohol in question to potassium or sodium dichromate to sulfuric or any other strong acid. If the alcohol is primary or secondary, the orange solution will turn green either immediately or with heating. If the alcohol is tertiary, the solution will remain orange.
