to remove food particles and plaque etc. that is stuck in between your teeth and under your gumline, to prevent tooth decay and other problems.

Because food etc stuck between the teeth. If you don't removeit, bacteria will build up as the food decays. That can cause tooth decay, gum disease,  and extremely bad breath. If you don't like or have trouble using string floss, you can use a Waterpik.
