Pychobabble is a term most people use for the language psychologists and psychiatrists use. In other words it is the medical terminology for the field of psychology. It is usually used by a person who does not agree very well with the field of psychology. :0)

Dear Otis,

Although enjoying everybody's answers, the actual definition of your word I think to be what Y&Y has written...

When somebody, often a professional in the field of mental health uses big words to describe somebody's psychological condition, especially going on an on about it, and then they think they have now really gotten somewhere and accomplished something important, it's called psychobabble.

Psychobabble is the attempt to explain a person's actions in psychological terms, especially when used by one of your in-laws to make you aware of your shortcomings. It is what Colonel Sherman T. Potter would have called horse hockey.

My first reaction was that it was another word for bullsh*t---sounds good, but the person doesn't have a clue what he is talking about..

From the internet:  Psychobabble is a form of speech or writing that uses psychological jargon, buzzwords, and esoteric language to create an impression of truth or plausibility.

That's my understanding as well.
