Dementia causes the brain to shrink. The blood flow and oxygen to the brain is then affected. Short term memory is lost first, then long term memory. A person may know the name of his first grade teacher, but can't remember what he had for breakfast.
As dementia progresses, the person won't remember family members' names and finally they will "forget" how to walk, talk or eat.
