Lovage, or Levisticum officinale, has many excellent medical uses. Combined with anise and fennel and used in a tea, it has a history of being used for jaundice. Diuretic, stimulant, and carminative, lovage treats digestive problems, coughs, hoarseness, lower respiratory congestion, kidney problems, liver congestion, and migraines.

Lovage works well as a poultice for pustulent wounds and swellings because of its antiseptic and antibiotic properties. Pulverize the plant and place over the wound with a clean towel covering it, for at least 20 minutes and no longer than an hour.

After overindulgence in alcohol or other drugs, lovage tea will help cleanse the liver and kidneys. Lovage also induces menstruation and lactation, and should not be taken by pregnant women.
