Asians who often enjoy food heavily loaded with garlic have a method which is most effective. The answer is to chew some cardamom seeds. This remedy is also known in France. Simply chew the pods until they are soft, swallow the seeds and throw away the husks.
If no cardamom is available you might try, if desperate, chewing, and swallowing half a lemon, including pith and rind. Some say that chewing parsley or coffee beans works but that is really only a way of masking the smell and the effect is temporary.
Taking it all a stage further you might try this old remedy: take a quarter of a pint of sherry,125ml, add a good pinch of ground cloves, nutmeg and ¼ ounce or 8gms of cinnamon and bruised caraway seeds. Let it stand for a week shaking it twice a day. Then strain it off adding 10 drops of lavender oil and five of attar of roses. Two to three drops of this will ensure 'a breath of roses'.
