There are two types of mediastinal nodes. One type of mediastinal nodes is called the anterior mediastinal nodes and the second type of mediastinal nodes is called the posterior mediastinal nodes. The following two points are the two basic differences between the anterior mediastinal nodes and the posterior mediastinal nodes.

The anterior mediastinal nodes are located alongside the course of the brachiocephalic vessels and the aorta. On the other hand, the posterior mediastinal nodes are located along the azygos system of the veins and the oesophagus.

The anterior mediastinal nodes are the afferents from the lymphatic vessels, from the anterior mediastinum and the middle mediastinum, and the efferents to the bronchomediastinal trunk.
On the other hand, the anterior mediastinal nodes are the afferents from the viscera of the posterior mediastinum and the chest wall and the efferents to the thoracic duct, the inferior tracheobronchial nodes and the superior tracheobronchial nodes.
