Breathalyser or breathalyzer is a device which is used for denoting the breath alcohol content from a blood sample. Actually breathalyzer is just a brand name who manufacture these instruments but this brand became so popular that it became synonymous with the instrument. In many places it is also known by other names such as Intoxilyzer, Intoximeter, AlcoMate, AlcoScan, AlcoHAWK, Alcotest, Alcosensor and Datamaster. The breathalyzer was introduced in United Kingdom during the year 1967.

But the method of using breath alcohol testing devices started in the 1940s. The breathalyzer was developed by Dr Robert Borkenstein of the Indiana state Police in 1954. Since then breathalyzer has become one of the most widely used breath alcohol testing devices among law enforcement devices.
