Under active thyroid (hypothyroidism) occurs when the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormones. This tends to slow down the body's functions causing tiredness, constipation and sensitivity to the cold. Many people with an under active thyroid gain a lot of weight before a diagnosis is made or if the condition is poorly controlled. Normally, when the prescription of thyroxine (the medicine to treat under active thyroid) is correct, the extra weight starts to fall off as the medication is starting to have effect. The correct way to lose weight with an under active thyroid is to medicate yourself as per doctors prescription and to follow a recommended daily intake of calories. If you are still unable to lose weight, you must be either underestimating your calorie intake or your thyroid problem is not adequately controlled. In this case it is best to keep a food diary for a week making sure to record every single item you eat. Then ask your GP to assess whether you are having the correct dose of thyroxine.

Whether you have a thyroid issue or not, the process is still going to be the same...

if you're not losing weight:

1. Reduce your caloric intake
2. Exercise more

Sustained caloric deficit over time + exercise doesn't fail...

But.. If you hit a roadblock, go on a low fat, low carb, moderate protein diet.  Limit your sugar/starches and rely on exercise to reduce insulin levels.

Weight loss doesn't have to be complicated, although there are complicated weight loss systems out there.

If you need more info, this is an easy one that works.
