Don't worry about what the next guy is doing. If you exercise regularly you will be in good shape. The bench press is one of thousands of exercises and should not be performed more than say dumbbell flye. Bench press and bicep curls are for block heads that only know a few things about fitness. Here's a picture of the Dumbbell flye. You can also do in and decline dumb flyes.
