Hiccups are a spasm in your diaphragm. Your diaphragm normally works smoothly, when you're breathing in and out, sometimes your diaphragm gets irritated, which causes a spasm, therefore a hiccup. Some things that can irritate your diaphragm would be nervousness, eating too quickly, irritation of the throat and or stomach, and laughing hard.
