Depending on the severity of the fracture, they may have to reset the bone either physically or surgically. If the fracture is of the distal phalanx (the bone that forms the tip of the thumb), the doctor may prescribe painkillers and a splint. If the proximal phalanx (middle joint) or metacarpal (joint connecting the wrist to the thumb) is fractured, you may have to have a cast to immobilize the thumb.
I've had my distal phalanx broken and RE-broken a few times. Not much fun.
