You should not take Norethisterone tablets to stop your period from starting. These tablets are prescription only and you should take them on the advice of your doctor, not so that you can choose not to have a period. There are many people who ask will Norethisterone stop my period.

  • Norethisterone tablets
Norethisterone tablets are a man made progesterone tablet and are prescribed to women who have suffered with breast cancer or have trouble with their menstrual cycle. These issues with periods are usually bad PMS, severe period pain, extremely heavy periods and irregular menstrual cycle. These are not prescribed to stop your period altogether.

  • Effects on the menstrual cycle
Your period pattern will change when taking Norethisterone tablets but you can not guarantee that it will stop so taking the tablets for this reason is not guaranteed to work anyway. It is not a good idea to take medication for a different use than it is prescribed for, this can be dangerous and can cause your body harm in the long run.

When taking the medication, women do find that they can suffer from some side effects. The most common are;

  • Spotting in-between periods.
  • Headaches.
  • Mood swings.
  • Weight gain.
  • Breast tenderness.
These side effects are usually discussed with a doctor and some women do find that the downsides are outweighed by the positives and are happy to deal with any side effects.

Norethisterone is an active ingredient in some oral contraceptive tablets. This is not the only active ingredient and will not work as a contraceptive when taken on its own. Do not use these tablets as oral contraceptive as they will not work.

Do make sure that you seek medical advice from your doctor when you have any questions or are unsure about how to use any medication that you have been prescribed. Never take medication that has been prescribed to anyone else.

Recommended dose of norethisterone for the postponement of menstruation is 1 tablet three times a day starting from 3 days before the expected date of periods for maximum 10 days. If spotting starts then double the dose. Your spotting will be stopped. So, take 2 tablets three times a day until spotting stop then reduce the dose back to 1 tablet 3 times a day.

Yes, I am 13 and going on holiday in a few days, I went to the doctors and got a prescription because it was clashing with my period. In the leaflet it said take them 3 days before you start your period and then when you get to your period date it wont come.  So I am guessing it would stop in the next 3 days! Well thats what I am going to try and do!

Northisterone can be used just to postpone periods, but on its own has no contraceptive properties so you CAN still get pregnant on it.  As a teenager, I took it to delay periods as I was very active and climbing and canoeing etc.  It isn't ideal to alter your natural cycle but busy lives mean that it is necessary.  Always see your doctor first to discuss the options as they may still need to check your blood pressure and weight.  If you are looking for birth control, the combined pill such as 'loestrin' is a contraceptive pill which results in little or no period in the 7 day break.  Hope that helps.
