Low Potassium in human body is known as Hypokalemia.

The normal adult value of potassium in their body is 3.5-5.3 mEq/L.

Doctor will do blood test in order to determine potassium level in the body.

Eat fresh fruits and vegetables to balance your potassium level. Like Oranges and orange juice , spinach and other green vegetables, potatoes and bananas.

For the best description that I found was on www.wikipedia.org. Just a little way down from the top of the page, there is a content section, click on Potassium in nutrition and medicine. (I suffer from low potassium all the time, and the doctor keeps telling me to take in extra potatoes, and orange juice, none of which I like, nor the other foods mentioned, hence, the suffering, because I won't eat that stuff) Sometimes, in certain cases, the doctor will prescribe potassium to take in pill form, but usually only in the more dire patients. Hope all of this helps you out.

Low potassium may occur if you are limiting your intake of fruits and vegetables with your dieting. You can try eating a banana a day for 2-3 days and see if the soreness/cramping subsides. If it does then try to find a way to include high potassium fruits/vegetables in your dieting to correct this occurrence but as always with anything moderation and balance is the key and no answers can substitute for a doctors visit with associated blood work/labs to indicate any occurrences that may need investigating.

I was on 2 Blood pressure pills and Hydrochlorothiazide; I now only take 1 bp pill and the hydrochlorothiaizide and I have turned in to a urine factory, part due to Cushings syndrom and the water pill, I had my feet swelling and calfs doing that also . Then all of a sudden the swelling has stopped and I am having to add potassium I do ot with OJ, and vegatables . I am going to ask doc why no physician was willing to check and treat me for cushings and now they are playing catch up

I am going through this right now and my feet and calves swell real bad.  If you take potassium pills you will have to take water pills also. My doctor also says that my heart my enlarge and my knees will not work as good.  Drink lots of water.
