In the state of NH you can be fired or terminated from work even when you are still under Dr's care. Just as long they are still paying for workman's comp and if you took out short and long-term disability you can still collect money. But that is up here in NH because that what has happened to me and my neighbor. You would have to check out your state employment laws and workman's comp and all that.
