It is difficult to say how many people consider drug and alcohol abuse as a social problem but certainly a lot of people definitely do consider it such! Although drug and alcohol abuse might not seem like a social problem at first glance, especially to those involved, it does have significant impacts on the society in which we live. Those involved in these activities often feel that their only affect themselves and do no harm to society however this is very rarely the case.

Examples of how drug and alcohol impacts on the wider society include; If someone gets drunk and then chooses to drive home and causes an accident; when someone who is addicted to drugs resorts to theft and other crime to fund their habit; when someone takes drugs and is incapable of work, claiming money to live from the state; when an alcoholic suffers from liver damage due to their drinking and is hospitalised, taking up bed space and costing the country money; when alcohol problems tear families apart, this can result in children involved going off the rails and ruining their own lives too; and general unsociable behaviour which comes as a result of even social drinking and drug taking.
