Benadryl is the brand name for diphenhydramine and is an antihistamine for allergy relief. However, you may find that you can't find anywhere that sells Benadryl at short notice. There are a number of alternatives for Benadryl. These include:

  • Zyrtec
  • Claritin
  • Alavert
  • Tylenol
Zyrtec, known generically as Cetirizine is an antihistamine nasal spray or oral medication that can be used to treat allergies, hay fever, angioedema, and urticaria. The histamine acts on the H1 receptor, meaning temporary relief from allergy symptoms such as itchy eyes and a blocked nose. However, you may encounter side effects such as dryness of the mouth, nose and throat, urinary retention, blurred vision and/or stomach ache.

Claratin is a non-drowsy allergy medicine that can be used for allergy relief caused by indoors and outdoor factors. The generic name is Loratadine and it is similar to Zyrtec. Claratin consist of the decongestant pseudoephedrine, meaning it can also be used for the relief of colds as well as allergies. The occurrence of side effects is rare but the medicine could cause anxiety, nervousness and insomnia.

The non-prescription antihistamine Alavert can be taken as tablets or orally disintegrating tablets. Drowsiness is reduced with Alavert because it blocks a specific histamine receptor in the body. The possible side effects may include headaches, fatigue and dry mouth.

Tylenol is a popular choice amongst allergy sufferers. As well as allergy relief, the medication can be used to relief symptoms of the cold, flu and fever. Tylenol has several generic names including: Acetaminophen, acetazolamide and apraclonidine hydrochloride. The side effects of Tylenol include Dizziness, hyperactivity, headache, nausea, nervousness or anxiety and muscle weakness.

No matter how irritating your allergies become, it is essential that you always follow the correct dosage instructions in order to benefit from the best results.
