I just got a lower denture but have a hard time with it, mainly food gets stuck under it... Will I ever get used to them? Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I could deal with them?

I had the same problem, but with both upper and lower.  The first thing I did was get a do-it-yourself relining kit (Dr. Leonard catalogue on line), and redo the linings of both dentures.  The I switched to a powdered dental adhesive, which worked a whole lot  better than the gooey stuff.  That was over 6 years ago.  Although, like you, I still feel like I have a block of plastic in mouth with them in, I reline them myself every two months, and only wear them when I go out of the house.  Some people get used to them right away and never have a problem, others just tolerate them for the duration of having them.  My biggest problem at first was gagging, but constant wear finally got my mouth used to them, and that stopped.  Also -- the dentist explained to me that some people have more of a bottom "dental bridge" (the raised portion of gum that the lower denture sits on) which allows for more suction under the denture, while a flatter bridge decreases the suction.  I just used a lot more denture powder. (I use Fixodent too).

I truly hope that you get used to them.  I do know that constant wearing them, and having them relined, whether you do it yourself, or have a dentist do it, goes a long way in getting used to them.  Have you considered 2 or 4 implanted teeth to hold them tightly in your gum?

My mother (89) has upper and new lower dentures. She is having trouble with the bottom ones as they don't stay stuck down even with Fixodent. Where do you get a powdered dental adhesive? We live in France and I can only find the gels, which don't work for more than a few minutes if you eat anything. I've never heard of the powder or relining them. I'll try the catalogue you mentioned. Thanks.

They are not a proper fit, and my mom has had dentures for as long as I can remember... She had that same issue when she allowed a school to make her new dentures, not only did they look awful they didn't fit properly causing food to get under them and caused sores. It is fit, and a good fit should have almost a suction to your mouth when you remove them and it kinda sounds like opening a coke. They probably did the mold when the gums were still swollen or just didn't know what they were doing.

I am a dentist. I will tell you that lower dentures never fit or feel any where near as good as an upper denture. That is because an upper denture has very little moving parts or tissues to deal with, thus you get suction and very good retention. A lower denture "floats" like a canoe. This is because every time the tongue moves it raises the floor of the mouth thus lifting the denture off the gums. Your tongue moves when speaking and eating. The running joke amongst dentists is we charge double for the upper denture and throw the bottom denture in for free. Keep in mind that dentures are a prosthesis (like a wooden leg or "hook" arm prosthesis) Dentures are not a replacement of your natural teeth, they are a replacement for NO teeth. I don't know anyone that would rather have a prosthetic arm or leg than what God gave them, but I have many patients who demand to have ALL their teeth pulled with the comment: " I'd rather have dentures". There is a lesson to be learned from this. Best to keep what God gave you than depend on man to give you back what you lost. Implants are definitely the answer but can get pricey.

I would think that as a dentist you should know that what God gives some people is not all that great. I agree that our own teeth are better than dentures but when God gives us rotten teeth from the beginning and dentists who charge more than most people make, well then there are problems. I thought your reply was cold.
About the dentures, don't lose hope. You may need a good dentist, not like the one who commented. The bottom dentures are difficult to use. My dental techs were great in helping me. They told me that the mouth does not return to normal after pulling the teeth for at least 6 months. So your dentures should not have been relined forever after only 2 months. They should have put in a temp lining (that has to be redone at least every 30 days). Then after 6 months or so they would do the actual relining. Your face is change, your muscles too. It takes some time. Look for a good dentist to help you. If your dentist is not helping you then go to another. I know they are nuts in price but your dentist should be helping you more than they are. I have full dentures now. It has been two months. I am adjusting. I can eat with them in fine. I went to the dentist just yesterday for another temp lining to keep the dentures tight.

yes, I agree. you need to see a good dentist. it seems like the only viable solution is some sort of implant supporting mechanism. My brother went to this guy in CA and he is happy with his lower dentures. He says his dentist is the only certified dentist that does Teeth Express. if you want to know more and if you are in CA visit this page: http://irvinetustindentalimplants.com/teeth-xp/

Hi I read your post an was just wondering if you ever got used to the lower dentures?  I got mine 2 weeks ago and have maybe worn them for about 5 minutes.  They keep popping up and out and all over the show and I just CANNOT eat or talk with them in.  My dentist just keeps telling me they take time to get used to but this is just crazy.  Would be nice to know from someone who struggled too if they eventually felt normal.  Thanks.

Hi,
Can someone please answer this. I have upper dentures which are fine. I've just had a lower denture fitted 2 days ago.
I returned today to my dentist as I had no bite and I was sore. She filed them for me and they feel better. However, I'm not happy as the front of the denture pushed my bottom lip out on a slope also has a big gap between my gum and denture. I personally think the denture is too big. Yet my dentist thinks I just need to get used to them, now have a red sore blister on the inner lip..My Daughter said it looks as if I've had a stroke..Oh Joy! Help plz.. Sue

Hi I had a lower denture plate fitted two weeks ago but it was so uncomfortable that I had to ring the dentist I went back but he said that I just have to get used to it I explained that I can,t eat or even speak properly and to laugh (not that I have a deal of that to do at the moment) I have been given an appointment in 2 months time to realign them whatever that means. If I don,t laugh talk or eat I should be able to keep the denture in place!

Either you should go to a good dentist or you can go for Denture Adhesives as they are really useful. A friend of mine have suggested me this brand  securedenture.com  I am gonna try this. If you want you can also try this as he was facing the same problem but as he started using adhesive he is much happy.

I just got both uppers and lowers. I wasn't allowed by my insurance to have impressions made until 6 weeks after the extractions. So it has now been almost 2 weeks since I actually got them.

I too have difficulty with the lowers staying put. The upper is fine. I use SeaBond wafers. I used them before with my partial and IF you find they aren't working as well as time goes on just add another one. I was layering 3 before I had all my extractions.

I need to cut a thin you shaped one for my lower, wet it then press it in with something pointy. It stays in much better with it than without it.

I am wondering why they can't figure out a better method for lowers since everyone has the same problem with them popping out. Why can't they make them with a flexible base instead of this rock hard stuff? Or maybe put a tiny hole in them in the center to aid with the suction? There has to be a better way to deal with this problem. Forget eating with them in, they are all over the place.

I agree with you 100% about these so called dentists. From my experience I can tell you only about 5% of dentists are real dentists. Most of them are there for the money and only for the money, but they do not know jack. Look at this jerk KVAN that call him/herself a dentist.
As for you Nicegirl06. All I can tell you is to find a real dentist, one of those 5%.
