Enzymes are sometimes used to dissolve abdominal adhesions, which are essentially a build-up of unhelpful scar tissue.

Abdominal adhesions begin to form after surgery as the body tries to heal itself. They can cause a high degree of pain as the sufferer moves and they twist or contract uncomfortably. They can even be fatal.

Sometimes called intra-abdominal adhesions this condition can be treated using enzymes. Hyaluronidase is a mucolytic enzyme that breaks down the hyaluronic acid in the connective tissue that forms abdominal adhesions. Hyaluronidase is injected directky into the scar tissue, sometimes after the adhesion has first been broken down surgically.

Sometimes hyaluronidase is used to prevent the build up of abdominal adhesions. Protective barriers infused with it are applied at the time of the initial surgery to stop adhesions from forming in the first place.
