I think this happens to obese or morbidly obese people a lot. Because they are already quite large - it is difficult for them to tell when they are actually pregnant because the bump doesn't show.
Also being overweight can bring other health problems, so maybe they put any pains or throwing up down to their weight problem, and don't think they are pregnant.
