I am just embarking on the same career path and know a little about this, however it does depend on what type of counsellor you want to be I am training to be a person centred counsellor.
You need to contact your local college, where I live you need to do a 12 week induction, followed by 4 years of part time study (one evening a week) the first year is counselling skills the second is counselling studies then you have to pass an exam and have an interview to be accepted onto the diploma in counselling.
