Could be gum disease like gingivitis .. Or could just be an infection caused from an unsanitary toothbrush or could be an adverse reaction from your toothpaste.  Try changing brands maybe. Often  bad reactions are common to toothpastes with added whitening, mouthwash etc. Be sure to change your toothbrush at least every 3 months. In any event if this is troublesome perhaps it's time for a checkup At your dentist.

I'll definitely schedule a dentist appointment but honestly I'm hesitent because I have bad teeth due to years of abuse when I was a child. I take care of them now but the damage is already done. Last time I went to the dentist they were mean and rude about it.

Don't avoid going .. it's important to monitor your teeth especially if you have developed gum disease.

Find another dentist - ask people for their recommendations. There are too many out there so you shouldn't have to settle for one that behaves like this. You can also do a Google search for dentists in your area and see what their patient ratings are.
