What is the difference between fall and collapse?

These are sure two similar synonyms!  There's a slight difference that can make your writing more precise.

Collapse has more of an implication of structural failure, or "cave in."

Fall is a basic drop to the ground from gravity.

Both can be used euphemistically for things like civilizations.
