The common reason for low haemoglobin is low iron. However, in order to increase your level of haemoglobin, you also need to increase your level intake of iron. The amount of iron you need to consume depends on your age, gender, body type and diet. In case you are a woman then your intake of iron should be higher than a man. If you be inclined to keep away from red meat, miss out meals, eat fewer in order to lose weight, drink tea or coffee with your meals... you're almost certainly not in taking sufficient iron. If you do not eat any meat, fish or poultry, you will require strong more iron than people who do. In case your menstrual periods are heavy then you will definitely have to intake higher amount of irons to increase your haemoglobin.
Some of the food that has maximum iron is heme iron, which is usually found in beef, lamb, pork, liver, veal, chicken, turkey (the dark meat has more iron), fish and seafood. The food with non heme iron comprise of breakfast cereals (fortified with iron), breads and pasta (whole grain and enriched), lentils, dried peas and beans, tofu, seeds and nuts (pumpkin, sesame or peanut), dried fruit (raisins or apricots), dark green, leafy vegetables, and eggs.

I eat plenty of red meat and always had, why my iron stores were so depleted is still not clear but thank God supplements do work, they just need to be taken wisely...
