Pregnancy occurs when a mature ovum (egg) is released through the ovarian follicle (wall) and into the fallopian tubes, where it is then fertilized by a man's sperm.  Ovulation usually occurs 10 to 14 days after menstruation, and the implantation of a sperm into the ovum can typically take 6 to 12 days from the date of ovulation. If you add these figures up you will see that a woman will become pregnant before a period is due.
  • Testing for pregnancy
You should be able to test for pregnancy as soon as your period is late as your body will have started to release hormones and chemicals that pregnancy tests detect. Obviously, a woman's menstruation cycle is not always as regular as it should be, but if you are pregnant, your body will show signs of this as soon as your period is late.
  • Pregnancy test home kits
Modern pregnancy tests are almost as reliable and accurate as a doctor's tests as long as the instructions are followed correctly. These home pregnancy tests work by analyzing the chemicals in urine. When pregnancy occurs, a chemical called human chorionic gonadotropin is released and is present in the urine. If the pregnancy test finds the chemical, it means you are pregnant. These chemicals are released between 6 and 12 days after the date of implantation and means that the pregnancy can be detected at any point from this time. Ovulation and fertilization happen roughly 10-12 days before the start of your period, so if your period is late, this is a good indication of pregnancy. You can use a pregnancy test as soon as your period is late and it should confirm accurately whether you are pregnant or not.
