No, Requip is not considered a narcotic. Instead, Requip is classified as a dopamine agonist. I'll tell you a bit more about these two types of drugs, and hopefully it will help you understand Requip a bit better.

What is a narcotic?

Most, but not all, narcotics are opioids, meaning they are painkillers which derive from the opium poppy. Narcotics work as painkillers by stopping the transmission of the pain signals in the brain. They are known for their addictive qualities, and as such are often only recommend for short term use.

What is a dopamine agonist?

Dopamine agonists work by stimulating the nerves receptors, meaning they essentially play the role of dopamine in the body when this is otherwise lacking, although they are not turned into dopamine. The role of dopamine in the body is to help the brain send its signals, it's a neurotransmitter.

So what does this mean for Requip?

So, with Requip, as a dopamine agonist, rather than blocking the signals of pain as a narcotic would, the drug actually activates the signals.
