Yes--they need to be tested.  Many bacterial infections (for him) have no symptoms but unless he clears it up, the two of you will likely pass it back and forth.

 I would think that both of you would have to be treated to get rid of it for good.  Just like a yeast infection....if it's bad enough the doctor will give the man medicine too.  The same medicine should work whether it's a cream or a pill.  Some bacterial infections mimic the symptoms of a yeast infection but the yeast infection meds don't work.  Been there done that!!
