Your saliva glands actually produce anywhere up to 3 pints of saliva each day, and a lot of this saliva (or spit) is swallowed without you even noticing it.

If you're suffering from a build-up of saliva that is causing you to spit excessively, there are a couple of possible causes:

Why do I keep spitting?
Hyper-salivation is term used to describe excess saliva in the mouth. It can be caused by two general problems:

  • An inability to swallow saliva
  • Over-productive saliva glands
Increased saliva production could be associated with the following conditions:

  • Throat or mouth infection
  • Reaction to medication
  • Pregnancy
  • Ill-fitting dentures
  • Rabies
  • Arsenic poisoning
On the other hand, it's possible that your need to spit is based on your inability to swallow the saliva that your glands are creating.

This inability to swallow saliva can be a symptom of the following ailments:

  • Allergies
  • Sinusitis
  • Autism
  • Dementia
  • Down Syndrome
  • Parkinson's disease
  • Stroke
As with any health problem, I would recommend booking an appointment to see your local healthcare provider at the earliest possible opportunity.

The longer you leave a condition undiagnosed, the harder it will be to treat!
