Ritalin is the brand name of Methylphenidate, a psychostimulant most known for its use in the treatment of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), although it can also be used to treat narcolepsy.

Ritalin has certain side effects that are very common and ten percent of people who take Ritalin can expect nervousness, some spells of insomnia, or headaches. If the headaches become severe, please alert your physician.
Other common side effects include heartburn, having a dry mouth, restlessness and nausea; less common include mood swings, depression and behavioral changes.

If you have a heart condition, you must mention this when to your doctor if they intend to proscribe you or your child Ritalin, as there is a risk it may cause sudden death in children and teenagers, especially children or teenagers with heart defects or serious heart problems.

This medication also may cause sudden death, heart attack or stroke in adults, especially adults with heart defects or serious heart problems. Ritalin may also slow children's growth or weight gain. Talk to your child's doctor if you have concerns about your child's growth or weight gain while he or she is taking this medication.
