People start smoking for many different reasons- peer pressure is normally one of them - they want to fit in with friends and seem grown up and cool. Once they start they become addicted to the nicotine in the cigarettes and it becomes very hard to stop.

People also often have an 'it'll never happen to me' attitude so even though they know smoking is dangerous they believe they will not be one of the ones who gets ill from it.

People just do it for their pleasure! Once or twice or thrice if u smoke a cigarette or a cigar then you get used to it and it becomes your addiction! So in spite of seeing the warning for not to smoke as it causes many harmful diseases people do it becoz they r just addicted to it , nothing else! So that's how it works!

Basically smoking is an addiction..... There's a fact that nobody on this earth started smoking coz he merely wanted to..... It always started by peer pressure or by the thought of experimenting or some depression... Which ended up being addiction

They ignore that smoking'll bring illness to them, they depress from their work or any other thing, they get used to doing it then it's hard for them to stop it.

We are different mind so it's not easy to convince someone to stop smoking, even they know it'll cause cancer. Such is the life!

Curiosity, peer pressure, and even boredom can all motivate people to start smoking even though they know it is bad for them. Many people also start smoking when they're younger, at which point they don't necessarily realise the gravity of their actions.

Of course, it's no secret that smoking is addictive, but I can tell you from experience, that not only is it an extremely hard habit to kick, but that it's also easy to underestimate how hard it will be to quit. I'd never experienced addiction before, (unless we are counting my chocolate addiction..) and thought I'd be able to stop no problem as soon as I wanted to, but boy was I wrong!

Often, smoking becomes a coping mechanism, and although they know the consequences of smoking are bad, smokers often feel a short lived positive boost when they light up, which can help deal with stress. Of course on the other hand, often the stress is actually caused by the addiction itself, creating a cycle which is hard to break.

Most often, it is the addiction which keeps people smoking despite the risks, and this addiction is not only physical but also mental. But, it can be broken. Hurrah!

Below is a great video which explains why people smoke:

I think there's a psychological and physical element to be honest.

Lots of people won't admit this, but it has been seen as "cool" to smoke, which is often why people start as teenagers. The fact that it's bad for you and it has a sort of grubby, urban, vintage feel possibly might explain why people think it's "cool". Often it can be a way to start conversations in smoking areas too.

The reason people carry on smoking is because due to the fact they're now addicted to the nicotine, smoking relaxes them and they get stressed without it.

People smoke even if they know it is a poison that will kill them slowly because they get addicted to the addictive substance i.e the Nicotine present inside the cigarettes that makes them helpless and make them dependent on this bad habit.

I've never heard of anyone being peer pressured into smoking. That's an old stereotype. Your peers are really not concerned with you smoking. I've known plenty of smokers and none of them tried to pressure anyone into smoking.

Yes, they know it's bad for their health. Any smoker who's been smoking for at least a year knows that. The amount of headaches a person will get, the lack of enough oxygen in their lungs and finding it hard to breathe, and the painful coughing.

They smoke because it's addicting. While most people only have to deal with one habit that they're trying to remove, most smokers have certain times of the day they smoke (e.g., in the morning, before work, on their break, at lunch, before they go to bed) and these end up becoming many habits in a single day that they need to break.
