Transplantation using stem cells derived from cord blood is preferred to bone marrow. The advantages of stem cells are ease of availability and collection, less post transplantation complications, a greater tolerance for tissue mismatch as stem cells are immunologically immature and thus more tolerant than bone marrow stem cells.
