Hematocrit (HCT)is a blood test which is carried out to measure the number and size of red blood cells in the blood. The test is carried out by taking blood from the a vein in the elbow. After that a band is tied around the upper arm in order to restrict blood flow and the puncture is wiped with antiseptic. This causes the veins to swell with blood and blood is them drawn from the vein with a syringe. In the case of children a sharp needle or lancet may be used to collect the blood. There is no prior preparation required of the patient before the test. The HCT is usually conducted if you have symptoms related with leukaemia, anaemia and other blood related dosorders.
