Menstruation, or 'menses' is the bleeding from a woman's uterus, when the woman's body prepares for receiving the sperm from a male and start making a baby, and it does not happen. In other words, when a woman does not happen to conceive a child that month, then the lining of the uterus starts to shed, and this comes out of the woman's body through a small opening in her cervix, from where it passes out through her vagina.
When a girl begins her first period, it is known as 'menarche', and the average age for a girl to start menstruating is about twelve. This does not however mean that all girls start to menstruate at the same age: it differs from person to person, and statistics show that menarche can begin any time form the age of ten to the age of sixteen in a girl, menstruating for the first time.
